Neurons

Neurons are the basic functional unit of the nervous system. They can be identified in neural cell cultures and nervous tissue by immunodetection of specific intracellular or cell surface proteins. It is also possible to use neuronal cell markers to classify neurons based on neurotransmitter expression (for example, as being cholinergic, dopaminergic, GABAergic, glutamatergic, glycinergic, or serotonergic) and to label the distinct morphological regions (dendrite, axon, synapse, growth cone) of neurons.
