Neurons – Structural Markers

Neurons are composed of distinct morphological regions with differing functions. These regions can be discriminated from each other by immunodetection of specific proteins that are localized to that specific region. This interactive graphic lists some of the most common markers used to identify the dendrites, axons, synapses, and growth cones of neurons. Clicking on a marker will take you to the R&D Systems selection of antibodies directed against that molecule. Clicking on a marker that is designated by (novusbio.com) will take you to the Novus Biologicals’ website and their antibody offerings for that protein.

Data Examples

MAP2 in Human Neurospheres. Microtubule-Associated Protein 2 (MAP2) was detected in immersion-fixed human embryonic stem cells/neurospheres using a Mouse Anti-Human MAP2 Monoclonal Antibody (R&D Systems, Catalog # MAB8304). Cells were stained using the NorthernLights 557-Conjugated Donkey Anti-Mouse IgG Secondary Antibody (R&D Systems, Catalog # NL007; red) and counterstained with DAPI (blue). Specific staining was localized to cell surfaces.
Synaptotagmin-1 in Rat Spinal Cord. Synaptotagmin-1 was detected in perfusion-fixed frozen sections of rat spinal cord using a Mouse Anti-Rat Synaptotagmin-1 Monoclonal Antibody (R&D Systems, Catalog # MAB43641). The tissue was stained (red) and counterstained (green).
GAP-43 in Embryonic Mouse. GAP-43 was detected in immersion-fixed paraffin-embedded sections of embryonic mouse tissue (E15.5) using a Rabbit Anti-Human/Mouse/Rat Antigen Affinity-Purified Polyclonal Antibody (Novus Biologicals, Catalog # NB300-143). The tissue was stained with an Alexa Fluor® 488-conjugated secondary antibody (green) and counterstained (blue).
