Carrier Free

What does CF mean?

CF stands for Carrier Free (CF). We typically add Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) as a carrier protein to our recombinant proteins. Adding a carrier protein enhances protein stability, increases shelf-life, and allows the recombinant protein to be stored at a more dilute concentration. The carrier free version does not contain BSA.

What formulation is right for me?

In general, we advise purchasing the recombinant protein with BSA for use in cell or tissue culture, or as an ELISA standard. In contrast, the carrier free protein is recommended for applications, in which the presence of BSA could interfere.

Background: UNC5H2/UNC5B

Netrin Receptor UNC5B is one of four related receptors that comprise the UNC5 family and serve as receptors for the axon guidance molecule Netrin-1. UNC5B is a type I transmembrane protein that contains two Ig-like and two thrombospondin domains in its extracellular domain (ECD), and a ZU5 domain, a DCC-binding domain, and a death domain in its intracellular region (1, 2). It is widely expressed in various embryonic and adult tissues including neural, hematopoietic, and immune tissues (1, 3, 4). Human UNC5B has a predicted molecular weight of approximately 104 kDa. Its ECD shares approximately 92% amino acid sequence identity within shared regions in the mouse and rat orthologs, which are termed UNC5H2. UNC5B regulates axon guidance by facilitating Netrin-1-mediated axon repulsion of neuronal growth cones (1). It complexes with the attractive Netrin receptor DCC and switches its response to Netrin-1 from attraction to repulsion (5). UNC5B can also induce growth cone collapse via its associations with the RGM-A receptor Neogenin and the soluble ECD of FLRT3 (2, 6). Outside of the nervous system, UNC5B facilitates Netrin-1-mediated inhibition of capillary branching and leukocyte migration, as well as Netrin-1-mediated promotion of osteoclast differentiation (7-10). UNC5B also functions as a dependence receptor. In the absence of Netrin-1, UNC5B mediates p53-dependent apoptosis via activation of DAPK (11, 12). UNC5B is believed to play a role in tumorgenesis. It has been shown to inhibit tumor cell growth and invasion, and its expression appears to be down-regulated in multiple cancers including colorectal, breast, ovary, uterus, stomach, lung, and kidney (13, 14). Additionally, UNC5B is thought to play a critical role in the development of atherosclerosis and the survival of renal tubular epithelial cells during acute kidney injury (15, 16).
