DMEM, high glucose, L-glutamine, no sodium pyruvate Summary

Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) with 4500 mg/L D-glucose, and L-glutamine. Without sodium pyruvate.

What is DMEM?

Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle’s Medium (DMEM), a modification of Eagle’s BME, is widely used for a range of mammalian cell culture applications. In comparison with BME, it contains a four-fold higher concentration of amino acids, vitamins, and additional components. A variety of DMEM versions are available in high glucose and low glucose formulations. DMEM requires supplementation with serum, typically 10% Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS), since this medium does not contain proteins, lipids, or growth factors.

Each lot of DMEM is prepared from powdered base medium, tissue culture-grade water, and is sterile filtered using a 0.2 micron filter. Representative samples of each lot of DMEM are tested to confirm the absence of bacterial or fungal contamination using methods adapted from the current U.S. Pharmacopeia. DMEM is manufactured in our ISO 9001:2015 certified facility.

For the specific media formulation, please refer to the datasheet.

FAQs

  1. Why do some cell culture media contain Sodium Pyruvate?

    • Sodium pyruvate is added to many low glucose and high glucose DMEM formulations. Sodium pyruvate can be used by cells as a readily accessible carbon source for energy production and other critical metabolic pathways, bypassing the need to produce it biosynthetically from glucose or amino acids. Some cell lines require the addition of pyruvate to the culture media since they lack the ability to convert glucose or amino acids into pyruvate.
