Carrier Free

What does CF mean?

CF stands for Carrier Free (CF). We typically add Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) as a carrier protein to our recombinant proteins. Adding a carrier protein enhances protein stability, increases shelf-life, and allows the recombinant protein to be stored at a more dilute concentration. The carrier free version does not contain BSA.

What formulation is right for me?

In general, we advise purchasing the recombinant protein with BSA for use in cell or tissue culture, or as an ELISA standard. In contrast, the carrier free protein is recommended for applications, in which the presence of BSA could interfere.

Background: Ly6H

Lymphocyte Antigen 6 Family Member H (Ly6H), also known as NMLy6, is a member of the Ly6/urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) superfamily of proteins. LY6 proteins are primarily glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored cell surface glycoproteins characterized by the presence of an LU domain. The LU domain is an ~80 amino acid (aa) region with a conserved disulfide bridge arrangement resulting in a three-fingered structural motif (1). The mature extracellular domain of human Ly6H shares 92% aa sequence identity with mouse Ly6H. Ly6H is predominantly expressed in normal brain tissue and can modulate alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor ( alpha 7 nAChR) signaling (2, 3). The alpha 7 nAChR signaling is associated with several conditions, such as nicotine addiction, lung and liver cancer, preeclampsia, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's disease (2, 3). The alpha 7-subunits are controlled by prototoxins in the Ly6 family. Specifically, Ly6H reduces cell-surface expression and calcium signaling by alpha 7 nAChRs, thus suppressing alpha 7 nAChR function (2, 3). Ly6H expression is increased in tumors associated with several cancer types (4). The increase in expression is associated with poor outcome on patient survival in breast, lung, ovarian, gastric, and colorectal cancer (4).
