CometAssay Analysis Software Summary
Specialized software system for analyzing comet assays. After submitting order, the software is shipped on a USB drive.Key Benefits
• Designed for use with CometAssay or CometChip
• Analyzes Alkaline or Neutral Comets
• Obtains measurements for Percent DNA in Tail, Tail Moment, Tail Length, Integrated Cell Intensity, Tail Area, Tail Moment Arm, Tail Moment of Inertia, and Fragmentation.
• Summary statistics are easy to export for Boxplot Analysis
Why Use CometAssay Analysis Software?
The software applies state of the image processing methods to automatically locate and score comets to characterize and quantify the degree of DNA damage revealed by the comet assay. It is compatible with 4X images which allows for rapid screening of up to 300 comets in seconds when analyzing CometChip. Comet Analysis Software can rapidly evaluate large numbers of cells, related to each treatment group or screening target in a study, and generate summary statistics based on the corresponding numeric results.

FAQs
-
What image analysis tools are available for analysis of data generated by the CometAssay®, and CometChip®?
We offer a software (Catalog # 4260-000-CS) designed to improve, standardize, and make comet analysis easier. The software will automatically locate and score comets from digital images to characterize and quantify the degree of DNA damage revealed by the comet assay. CometAssay, and CometChip Kits. The Comet Analysis Software can rapidly evaluate large numbers of cells and generate summary statistics based on the corresponding numeric results.
-
Is there a demo or free trial available for the CometAssay Analysis Software?
A video is available on the Bio-Techne website to demonstrate how the software works (Home » Resources » Protocols » How to Run the CometAssay Analysis Software). A demo or free-trial of the software is not currently available for customers to try with their own samples before purchase.
-
Can the CometAssay Analysis software be installed on multiple computers at the same time?
The software can be installed on multiple computers but the USB dongle needs to be plugged-in for the software to work. That limits it to only running the software on one computer at a time.
-
What type of images will the CometAssay Analysis software accept? What image magnification is acceptable?
The CometAssay Analysis Software will accept TIFF, JPEG or PNG images. A magnification of 4X or 10X is acceptable.
-
Can Comets be picked manually with the CometAssay Analysis Software?
No. The software automatically picks Comets to be analyzed once study parameters are defined. Comets can manually be excluded from the analysis.
-
Is there a recommended image bit-size for the CometAssay analysis software?
The maximum image size is limited by the hardware capabilities of the computer running the CometAssay software. It is recommended that one work with the highest quality of images that can be used on a particular computer without incurring significant wait times in the image import process. The original, uncompressed image files captured by the microscope imaging software will provide the best results for Comet assay analysis.
-
What factors can affect the inclusion of Comets when using an image with the Comet Assay analysis software?
The quality of the image used for analysis can affect the inclusion of the Comets for analysis. If the image used for analysis has very bright Comets and/or is over-exposed, the software's dynamic range may prevent it from including dimmer Comets if they are adjacent to bright Comets. One way to get around this is to split the images into quadrants (or other pieces) so that the brightest spots are not close to the dim spots. The dimensions and resolution should not be changed when splitting images.

Is the Comet Analysis software included in the Starter Kit Catalog # 4250-050-ESK?
The software is not included with catalog # 4250-050-ESK. The software is available for purchase as catalog # 4260-000-CS.
