October 2017 Go Everywhere with Bio-Techne Travel Grant Awarded to Post-Doc from University of Tampere!

Bio-Techne launched its Go Everywhere Travel Grant Program which awards $1000 USD (or equivalent) to 1 researcher each month to attend the meeting of their choice. This grant program allows the researcher to attend more targeted meetings in their field and provides funding to support both small and large scientific associations that promote discovery and collaboration.

The recipient of the October 2017 grant is Krista Rantanen, PhD, a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Department of Automation Science and Engineering at the University of Tampere in Tampere, Finland!

Krista Rantanen, a Post Doc from the University of Tampere is the October recipient of the Bio-Techne Go Everywhere Travel Grant in 2017

Krista has chosen to apply the grant to the Adaptations to Hypoxia in Physiology and Disease Keystone meeting in Whistler, Canada.

Krista’s work is focused on developing more accurate ways to perform cell culture under physiological oxygen tension, or hypoxia.

“We want to develop a possibility to irradiate cancer cells in hypoxic conditions. This is of particular interest because all tumors are hypoxic. At the same time most cancer patients, with these hypoxic tumors, are given radiation therapy. What is not known, due to lack of suitable equipment, how cancer cells on molecular level react to irradiation when oxygen is scarce.”

Krista presented a poster on her ‘Minihypoxy’ project. ‘Minihypoxy’ is a cell culture platform they have developed in her lab. It is a portable, low cost system where one can image cells under hypoxia as well as subject cells to irradiation while maintaining accurate, hypoxic cell culture conditions.

In her work, Krista utilized Novus Biologicals® antibodies for prolyl hydroxylase domain-containing protein 1(PHD) enzymes and hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs). To see Novus Biologicals’ full offering for Hypoxia research, visit their research area page.

Bio-Techne and our brands are proud to support Krista’s work and the work of many of the researchers that have applied to our travel grants so far this year. If you are interested in applying to any of our travel grants, please go to www.rndsystems.com/travel.
