Bio-Techne Go Everywhere Travel Grant - July Recipient Selected!

July 2017 Go Everywhere with Bio-Techne Travel Grant Awarded to PhD Student from the University of Lisbon!

Bio-Techne launched its Go Everywhere Travel Grant Program which awards $1000 USD (or equivalent) to 1 researcher each month to attend the meeting of their choice. This grant program allows the researcher to attend more targeted meetings in their field and provides funding to support both small and large scientific associations that promote discovery and collaboration.

The recipient of the July 2017 grant is Pedro Papotto, a PhD Student at the Institute of Molecular Medicine at the University of Lisbon in Portugal!

Pedro Papotto, a PhD Student at the Institute of Molecular Medicine at the University of Lisbon in Portugal is the July Recipient of the Bio-Techne Go Everywhere Travel Grant in 2017

Mr. Papotto is conducting his research in the lab of Dr. Silva-Santos. He has selected to attend the World Immune Regulation meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

His PhD thesis focuses on understanding the generation and regulation of peripheral IL-17 producing γδ T cell (γδ17 T cell) responses during the course of an inflammatory process.

Previously, his lab was able to show that γδ17 T cells differentiate de novo in the lymph nodes during the course of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a mouse model of multiple sclerosis. They found that this process was primarily regulated by IL-23/IL-23 R signaling and did not require myelin specific antigens. Importantly, these peripherally induced γδ17 T cells comprised a large fraction of the total γδ17 T cells in EAE, which confirms the relevance of this novel γδ T cell differentiation pathway. In humans, peripheral generation of γδ17 T cells seems to be the only pathway by which these cells are generated, highlighting the importance of achieving a greater understanding of the molecular mechanisms controlling this process.

Pedro hopes to present his work at the meeting next March.
